Back to Army days

I am back to army in my former unit at my former camp. Lots of changes in camp I must say. It is now day 2 of my service upon resuming my disruption. Still at the stage of knowing more people in my branch and unit.

However, I do see God is working and showing me the people whom I can be sharing the Message with. Indeed as I was reading "The Cross of Christ" today in my branch office, one of my new friends came and ask me more about Jesus. Pls do pray for me as I share with this brother more about my Lord. =)

Book Review

Since after my exams in early May, I have been reading. The first book which I read after my exams is "The Da Vinci Code". Hope to finish reading it so that I can return to my sister's friend who is the owner of the book. After reading "The Da Vinci Code", I feel that I have already built up a sense of motivation in reading books. Haha, therefore I managed to finish reading two more books namely, "Disciplines of a Godly Man" by Pst R. Kent Hughes and "Personal Bible Study Methods" by Pst Rick Warren.
Upon reading, I just want to do a simple book review of these books. "Disciplines of a Godly Man" is a book lent to me by my bible study leader. He actually hope to use this book as our bible study material. However due to his hectic schedule, we did not really get to go through this book. It has been on my book shelf for many weeks before I finally decided to read through it. (Actually I hope to clear off reading some of the books which I either bought or friends gave to me which I have not read.) This book highlights sixteen disciplines of a Godly Man. They are namely:
Relationship
Discipline of Purity
Discipline of Marriage
Discipline of Fatherhood
Discipline of Friendship
Soul
Discipline of Mind
Discipline of Devotion
Discipline of Prayer
Discipline of Worship
Character
Discipline of Integrity
Discipline of Tongue
Discipline of Work
Ministry
Discipline of Church
Discipline of Leadership
Discipline of Giving
Discipline of Witness
Discipline of Ministry

In my opinion, we men really need lots of discipline and these sixteen disciplines are our goals which we should work towards to. Like Pst Kent Hughes puts it, "When one seriously trains, he willingly undergoes hours of discipline and even pain so as to win the prize - running 10,000 miles to run 100 yards at one's best. The successful Christian life is a sweaty affair! No manliness no maturity! No discipline no discipleship! No sweat no sainthood!" Let us enforce discipline in our lives, shall we?

The other book, "Personal Bible Study Methods" is a book which teaches you twelve methods of personal bible study which you can use at your own discretion. Okay, without further a-do, let's take a look at these twelve methods discussed by Pst Rick Warren. (By the way, he is also the author of the book, "The Purpose Driven Life")

The twelve methods are namely:

The Devotional Method of Bible Study
The Chapter Summary Method of Bible Study
The Character Quality Method of Bible Study
The Thematic Method of Bible Study
The Biographical Method of Bible Study
The Word Study Method of Bible Study
The Book Background Method of Bible Study
The Book Survey Method of Bible Study
The Chapter Analysis Method of Bible Study
The Book Synthesis Method of Bible Study
The Verse-by-Verse Analysis Method of Bible Study

Under the appendices of this book are some topics which all of us can definitely benefit by reading. They are, "How to Have a Meaningful Quiet Time", "General Questions for a Biographical Study", "A List of Positive and Negative Character Qualities", "A Partial List of Biblical People", "A Suggested List of Key Words for Study", "What to look for in a Chapter Analysis Study" and "A Plan for Studying the Bible Systematically"

That's all folks for my book review of these two books. Next time, if I have the time to read more books, I can do more book reviews on my blog. God Bless. =P

Adventurous Day

Today is an adventurous day for me. Haha, I bet (sorry, not implying that I gamble, just a verb) you will also say that if you cycled from Compassvale Lane to Sengkang East Ave to Upper Serangoon Rd to Hougang Ave 7 to Defu Ave 1 to Eunos Link to Bedok Reservoir Road to Tampines Ave 4 to Tampines Ave 7 to Loyang Ave to Telok Paku Rd to Nicoll Dr to Changi Coast Rd to Xilin Ave to Simei Ave to Tampines Ave 5 to Tampines Ave 1 to Tampines Ave 10 to Tampines Rd to Hougang Ave 7 to Punggol Rd to Sengkang East Ave to Compassvale Lane again. I started off at 12.30pm and managed to get back home at 5pm in one piece but drenched. Anyway, I was just trying out the night cycling route which we have planned for YA on 9 June.

Overall, it was in fact quite tiring and to make matters worse, it started to pour heavily. I was totally drenched and had no choice but to continue to cycle because I wanted to go home! Haha, was praying to God for my safety and the weather while cycling because I felt it was actually quite dangerous with the vehicles coming from your back and zooming past you. How I wished my bicycle can be transformed to a motorcycle instantly so that I can get home faster. :Þ

As the rain came rushing down on me, I felt that I have to pray to God to ask the Holy Spirit to sustain me through the intensive cycling which was required to bring me back home. With all the water rushing to my face and the splashing of the puddles which my bicycle had cut across, I have only one goal and that was to continue to cycle all the way till I reached my home safely in one piece. At that moment, I realised that one goal which I should be trying to attain out of all my desperation to achieve it in my Christian walk. That is to please God. (Eph 5:10)

How good will it be if my ultimate goal in life is to please God? That will mean that whatever decisions made, whatever circumstances or trials which I am facing, I will ask myself first: What is to be done so that I can please God. Heavenly Father, this is my prayer. May my heart be aligned to Your heart so that I can feel the same when You have compassion on the world and my soul will be joined to Your Spirit so that I can listen to Your prompting closer. Amen. =)

Catching Up

I just had a nice catching up with three of my old army friends, Lim, Wong and Woo over dinner. It was a pleasant evening with all of us chit-chatting about the good old days. Will just like to mark this date so I can remember the last time when we all met again to talk about army.

Oh yes, going back army on next Monday but still haven't received the letter to confirm the date. Hopefully by this week I should be able to receive the letter. If not, I will have to call them up. A period of uncertainty here. Do not know how the army looks like now. I think will have to take a step at a time. Times have changed. The previous computer system for my army vocation has also changed...

Anyway no matter where I go, I hope to be a witness for Christ. This is also true either I go into full time ministry or full time working. I believe God has called every Christian to testify for Him. Will like to live up to the Call. =)

Bible Overview

This is a summary done by Sis Ruth some years ago during our Lighthouse cell group. I feel we can look through this summary and grasp a basic overview of the Bible. All in all, we can see God is indeed the Author of the Bible. =)

A New Perspective

It is indeed a joy just to be chatting with a fellow brother in Christ. Sharing your struggles to one another and praying for each other is the way to go. Praise the Lord who is always working in the midst of us. He is definitely with us when two or three of us gather in His name. (Matt 18:20)
Recently, I got to know fellow Brother Eugene closer over lunch together after YA service for these past two weeks. Last time, I did not really talk to this brother until our church anniversary early last month when we were both serving fellow church mates watermelons. So I must say we got closer because of watermelons! Haha. He is quite a humorous guy man so if you do not really know him, go talk to him and listen to his IQ questions. Hehe.
Today after lunch, we were just chatting about work and he has indeed shared something which opens up a new perspective of my views. He said that as a matter of fact, the working world is another great harvest with a lack of workers like us. It definitely also needs Christians to go out there to share the Gospel too. He was sharing to me that like now in his company, he is the only Christian there. Hence, he really sees it as an urgent need for him to be all the more going forward to share the Gospel.
In addition, he also shared about his stint with YFC upon his graduation. He advised me that one question which I can be asking myself is what is my true motivation in going into full time ministry? He told me that last time when he joined YFC, his motivation is actually to avoid going to working world. Hence, this is indeed one important queston for me as I reflect and really ask myself. Thanks, brother.
After our conversation, I have a new perspective coming in and it can be God's answer to my prayer as I have also been praying whether to go into full time ministry or full time working upon my graduation and ORD from army. Yah man, I need to go back to the army for another four months. Oh yes, I have to continue to keep praying and seek God's direction. Please do pray for me as well. Thanks. =)

Global Day of Prayer

Motivation behind the Global Day of Prayer
After Jesus was raised from the dead, He met with His followers many times during a period of forty days. He did far more than prove that He was alive. He spoke again and again about the Kingdom of God: the advance of God’s kingly love among all the peoples of earth. On the last day He was with them, He told them to stay in Jerusalem and to wait for “the promise of the Father.” Just after Jesus was received into heaven, His followers gathered together in Jerusalem to do exactly what Jesus had told them: to wait for the promise of the Father. But it was not a passive waiting. They waited by praying earnestly for ten days. They sought God zealously with their hearts aligned with “one mind” concerning the promise about the Spirit of God. They prayed persistently through the many other promises about the Kingdom of God that Jesus had spent so much time teaching them.
As we read their prayers, and as we listen to what poured out from their hearts in the days that followed Pentecost, we get a good idea about how they prayed. Their prayers and statements sprang from the written Word of God. They prayed in fervent, hope-filled passion for God to fulfill His promises regarding His kingdom on earth. Christ is again calling His church to unite in prayer. We are compelled to pray because the great troubles that shake our world have no human solution. Even more, we are called to pray because of the wonderful promises that God has purposed to accomplish by Christ’s life and power among the peoples of earth. It is time now for God’s people to gather again in persistent, united prayer. What better way to unite in prayer than to consecrate ourselves to seek God for ten days, as Jesus’ first followers did, culminating on the day of Pentecost?
Let us come together to pray, shall we?
More details can be located at http://www.prayforsingapore.org.sg/
I will be there, so I see you there hor. =Þ

My Evangelism Experience

I was asked to reflect upon some lessons learnt from the Lord after serving one year in the Evangelistic Committee (E-Comm) for NTU Campus Crusade for Christ recently.

One important lesson which I learnt from the Lord over these five years as a Christian is this: Do not force the Gospel down people's throat.

When I first received Christ back in October 2001, I was very excited in sharing this Good News of Christ saving us to my family and friends. Not too long later, I went home to type out my testimony and emailed it to all my relatives and friends. All their emails are placed under the To: column and were exposed for everyone to see. Those of you who have received my email back then must have known about this.

At that time, one of my friends in this email list replied to all with his own testimony about Buddhism. Due to my overzealousness for all my friends to be saved, I actually have a heated argument with this friend of mine over the internet. Sending to everyone on the list is not that amusing at all. A few of my friends also replied to me expressing their concerns over these emails of arguments. At the end of it, no one came to know the Lord closer but this friend of mine actually ignored me till now. Even now when we meet each other in school, he does not even bother to say hi to me.

This incident really caused me to regret over my actions. My brother in Christ, Albert actually did mention to me that sending my own testimony through emails to everyone will in fact turn people off. Another brother, Min Shiung shared a verse with me which is, "Titus 3:9 - But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless." How true this verse is. Instead of bringing that friend closer to Christ, I have actually pushed him away further.

Joining the E-Comm has taught me many lessons about evangelism. Evangelism is a process about bringing people closer to Christ. It is ongoing and does not stop after you have shared about the four spiritual laws or bridge of life. It is continually revealing of the Good News or Gospel of Jesus redeeming mankind through His Magnificent Work on the Cross.

Bearing a good living testimony for Christ is one key to bringing people to a surpassing knowledge of Christ. Instead of forcing the Gospel down people's throat, we should share and listen more to people's questions and concerns. Show to others what is truly the Character of Christ which is reflecting in our own lives. It is only when people has experienced the love of God, then they will come into acceptance of the role which Jesus should be playing in their lives.

Let's not persist in making sure that we have shared everything about the Gospel in one sitting but let us insist that we make it our very first priority to help people understand the Gospel. This is my evangelism experience.

My Response to The Da Vinci Code

I have just finished reading the book, "The Da Vinci Code". Overall, the whole plot was exciting as a novel on its own. All the investigations and solving of clues leading to who is the mastermind of the murder which started at Louvre Museum in Paris was interesting. However what is truly disturbing are some of the claims which shake the very basic foundation of the Christian faith.

I read the book to find out what is the story about. In fact, I was very into the plot as I read and finished the remaining 48 chapters of the book as of this afternoon. The whole book is about 107 chapters. I must agree that this is a book which certainly requires us as Christians to find out what the actual facts are. Let us not so called condemn or boycott this book but let us see it as a golden opportunity for us to find out more about our own faith. This is also a good chance for non believers to see for themselves what the true Christianity is like.

As a matter of fact, I will really like to thank the author of this book very much. This is because without the publishing of this book, I will not realise for myself how authentic the Bible is. I will say that with this book and the movie which is released as of today, pastors all over the world are addressing the claims of this book. All of them are showing us the evidences of the authenticity of the Bible which is still the leading international bestseller of all times.

As Pst Chris Chia of Adam Road Presbyterian Centre in his sermon, "A Different Church" puts it very well: if you are a non believer and you happen to read "The Da Vinci Code", it is actually your worst introduction to Christianity. Just like if it is your first time buying a German car and it breaks down many times, it is your worst introduction to German cars. Never will you buy a German car again.

Upon hearing of various sermons plus reading of different websites and books, I found out that all the more I believe in Jesus being divine and the true authenticity of the Bible. Hence, I in fact embrace the release of this book which has in fact created numerous opportunities for us to share the Gospel. Although I cannot deny that this is also one of the devil's evil schemes to deceive human race, it is not new at all. Even in the apostles' times, false teachers are everywhere.

Here is a link which has a large volume of articles regarding "The Da Vinci Code"
http://www.baptiststart.com/special/davinci_code.html

The good news is the battle had already been won by Christ.

As Jesus said in Matthew 16:18 - And I tell you that you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

We have all the victories in Christ and evil will never prevail. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, let us respond to "The Da Vinci Code" in a positive way, shall we?

Riding Days Are Gone

This motorcycle model indeed reminds me of the days when I was riding my dad's motorcycle. All I need is just to get my dad's permission and off I go to whatever places I want to go. It was quite convenient at that time. Furthermore, I can also bring my mum to whatever places she wants to go whenever my dad was too busy or tired to ride. I can replace my dad.

However, I have not been riding for a year plus now. The reason is last year April, my dad met with a serious accident while riding. He was hospitalised for a total of 32 days. From that day onwards, my family bans us from riding. Thus, I went back to square one -- taking public transport. It took me some time to adapt at first but now I am used to it already. =)

My dad on the other hand, took a longer time to adapt to it. He had been riding for over twenty years already and indeed found it very inconvenient without a bike. He was already riding when he was courting my mum, you see. It certainly took us some time to adapt to life without a bike. However with the newspaper reports of several bike accidents, it affirms us that riding carries a great amount of risks. I did remember very clearly that when I first passed my riding course in Singapore Safety Driving Centre (SSDC), all of us had to say a pledge together with the Traffic Police, pledging ourselves to be safe riders and stay alive.

Overall, I really thank God for saving and healing my dad. All Glory goes to Him. In fact as I reflect after the accident, I strongly feel that God saved my dad for a reason and that is to give him a great opportunity to know Him intimately. Thank you, my Godly Father in Heaven!

SMS

Short Message Service. This is an useful tool nowadays in terms of our communicaton with our families and friends. As I mentioned before, recently my parents have learnt how to send smses in Chinese. All of a sudden, my sms exchange with them has became a two-way communication now. Last time, it was like only one-way. I would normally just send them a sms in Chinese requiring them to answer me either "Okay", "Yes" or "No". However, now since they themselves can type in Chinese, they are able to ask me all sorts of questions ranging from "下雨了,有没有带雨伞?" to "有没有回来吃饭?" See, now it is two-way communication. =)

SMS is indeed popular as it poses no threat of immediate reply as compared to a phone call. The receiver can take his or her own time in replying so long that it does not exceed the time frame for that reply. In addition, it certainly does not disturb the person in what he is doing now, for example, in a meeting or watching a movie.

SMS is a way of communication which all of us can identify with. Do you know that there is a way which we can communicate with God? That is through prayer. I shared with my cell group members last Saturday that the word, "Prayer" means different things to different people of different faith. For Christians, prayer means talking to God. Yes, it is that simple - just talking to God. You can see we do not offer any sacrifices as we believe that the ultimate sacrifice had already been offered and that is in the person, Jesus Christ. He is our Redeemer and offers His Body as a redeeming sacrifice for us. The Worthy Lamb of God.

Hence, we just need to present our requests to God through talking with Him. It is indeed a privilege to pray! Phi 4:6 says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Furthermore, when we pray, we know that it is not a one-way communicaton but two-way. Because the Bible tells us so in 1 John 5:14-15 which says, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of him."

Therefore, when next time a Christian offers to pray for you, have the confidence that he is praying to a God who not only has given him this helpline to call for help but He is also listening attentively to his requests, answering them in His own Godly timing.

A Christmas Card

This is a Christmas card which I received about six years ago. The interesting fact is at that time, I was not a Christian yet. The sender is my ex secondary classmate, Albert. If you take a look at the card itself, you can really identify with me that God is indeed working in my life and leading me to Him. This is because before the next Christmas in year 2001, I became a Christian. The person who eventually led me to Christ is none other than Albert.

Ancient Chinese Characters

Being in Shanghai last year for a period of six months, I have learnt a little about Chinese history, language, economics, literature and cross-cultural communication. It is pretty interesting to see how the Chinese characters are developed from traditional to simplified and also the invention of Hanyu Pinyin. Sitting through these five subjects which I have to take during my stint there, I have understood China a little bit better than before.

As I reflect, I think about the various missionaries going to China year after year to reach out to the local Chinese. God is indeed doing a great revival work in China. By chance, I happened to see this flash in my friend's blog. It shares about how ancient Chinese characters when they were first developed are closely linked to the Bible! Pretty interesting I must say.

Here's the link: http://www.wbschool.org/chinesecharacters.htm

Do watch it when you are free, okay? =)

To Blog or Not To Blog?

This is the question which I have been asking myself last year. Actually the answer which I gave myself when I asked it last year was, "Not To Blog." That was why I closed down my blog dated December last year.

"So why are you blogging now again?", you may ask me now.

The reason why I am blogging again is firstly, a brother of mine, Soon Yang left a comment for me to encourage me to consider blogging again so that we can update each other after we graduate from NTU. In addition, he too has just started his own blog. The second reason is I will like to make use of this blog to journal my thoughts and hopefully it can serve as my online journal for me to see how God has been working in my life.

Therefore, when I "resurrected" this blog again, I actually tried to tell as few people as possible. This is because the objective of this blog is not to attract people to read it but to serve as my own journal. However, after I have setup my blog, I have actually told a lot more people other than the few which I plan to tell. haha.

So I am back again. 重出江湖

Of course, at first when I decided not to blog, there were some issues that prompted me to do so. I think you all may have heard about the three bloggers so I won't comment too much on it. Furthermore at that time, I was actually seeking an audience when I blog. Hence, the decision. On the contrary, when Soon Yang left me that comment. I felt I should continue to blog again. There is definitely nothing wrong with blogging about myself. Moreover since I am a Christian, my life will be orienting around my Saviour, Jesus Christ. Therefore, I realised that if I blog about myself, I will actually in one way or another blog about Him too. So actually I do not have to care much about who is reading my blog so long I see this blog as an online journal for me to read all the entries again and see how God is working in and through my life.

I hope that when you read my blog, you can indeed see God working in my life. If not, do leave me some comments so that I can go back on track in my journey with Him once again, ok? God however also affirmed me when I "resurrected" this blog again. Just yesterday after our tuition project meeting, Elder Kim Liang actually asked me about my blog. He said that he has been reading it! I was quite surprised and as I reflect, I realised that God may also want me to journal all my thoughts as I reflect on His teaching which in one way can also encourage others. Thus, in total, two brothers in Christ has encouraged and affirmed me to continue with blogging.

Okay, after all my explanation about starting this blog again, let me share with you why I titled the blog, "It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. (Psalm 118:8)" I got to meditate upon this verse after I received a powerpoint in an email. The powerpoint told me that actually Psalm 118 is in the middle of the shortest chapter of the Bible (Psalm 117) and the longest chapter of the Bible (Psalm 119) and Psalm 118 is the chapter in the middle of the Bible.

There are altogether 594 chapters before Psalm 118 and 594 chapters after Psalm 118. If we add up 594 to 594, we get 1188. So let's look at Psalm 118:8. It is this beautiful verse which God has said to us and it is a key verse which we can memorise. Indeed it is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. Isn't this amazing?

Before I end off this blog entry, let us look at what are some of the constraints we should take note while we are blogging. It is actually adapted from http://www.lawgazette.com.sg/2005-11/Default.htm. Hopefully those of us who have studied law before will not find it too wordy.

Bloggers beware: The Five Commandments for Bloggers

There is a need for Singapore bloggers to be aware of legal issues arising from their online diaries, particularly in the light of the recent cases involving seditious remarks made online by bloggers that resulted in jail terms and fines; and earlier in the year, a dispute arose over allegedly defamatory speeches made by a blogger about A*STAR’s Chairman, Philip Yeo, which was resolved amicably, but not without an apology. The threats of legal repercussions in the form of civil lawsuits and criminal charges serve as reminders of the potential legal problems that can arise from blogging, and indeed from any online activity, such as chat rooms, that involves the expression of opinions and views. Most bloggers treat their blogs as merely an online version of their personal diaries or journals. However, they often forget that the private-public distinction between keeping a written diary and one that is open to public viewing, can give rise to civil and criminal liability. This paper will consider some of the potential legal issues that may arise. Its aim is to create awareness and care, as well as to highlight sensitivities, but not to the extent that it may impact, to any significant extent, the greater freedom of expression that so many of us take for granted when navigating cyberspace.

Introduction

A ‘blog’ is short for a ‘weblog’ or a web application presented in the form of a web page, which generally consists of periodic posts from its author and creator. The term is now commonly used to describe online personal diaries or journals which, unlike their written counterparts, are made accessible to, and often even intentionally created for, public viewing. People use it to share their daily thoughts and experiences as well as a means to express themselves creatively through art, prose and poetry. In reality, the word has a much wider meaning and includes web pages which contain posts from politicians and political parties, corporations and the media, and other organisations and collectives. Some blogs enable visitors to interact by leaving messages or comments while others are non-interactive. It is only the latest in a series of forms for expression and interaction through the electronic medium. Before it became popular to blog, for example, people were already putting up posts through digital communities such as the usenet, discussion fora, e-mail lists and bulletin boards.

Currently, online diaries are most popularly used by teenagers and young adults for social intercourse and sharing, as computers and the internet have become a part of life in developed, and even developing, countries. Most personal users have some vague idea of the netiquettes involved, but it is clear that a majority are unaware or unconcerned with the possible legalities which might be involved in what they are doing. This is because individual internet users are perhaps emboldened by what appears to be less legal and regulatory control and enforcement of online activities. They are also perhaps more uninhibited due to a sense of anonymity, such as through the use of pseudonyms and false identities. This has led to increased risk-taking in the forms of unadulterated speech and expression that are appearing in blogs and other online fora. However, recent events have shown that real world consequences still follow words or actions taken in cyberspace. It is therefore useful to spend a little time considering the various legal implications which may arise from blogging so that one can be aware and take care in starting and maintaining a blog, and avoid any nasty surprises along the way. Many of these legal issues are not new and are already applicable to any medium, traditional or electronic, which allows public access.

The following are the top five legal quagmires that can arise from blogging that bloggers should be alert to, and which should be avoided.

Thou Shalt Not Defame or Spread Malicious Falsehood

On a cool spring day on 3 March 2005, a graduate student at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in the United States sat down before his computer, as was his habit, to express his feelings, thoughts and opinions in his online journal, which he called ‘Caustic Soda’, and through his pseudonym ‘Acid Flask’. Amongst his posts, he made some probably scathing remarks about someone half the world away, in Singapore. Unfortunately, that someone took umbrage at those statements. Even more unfortunately, that someone was a chairman of a governmental organisation, who happens to be Philip Yeo. Philip Yeo felt that the posts made by Acid Flask (or Chen Jiahao) were libellous and defamed him, and sought an apology, a retraction and a promise to cease and desist from making such similar statements against him again. After a failed attempt at such an apology on 26 April 2005, which was dismissed as insincere and not unreserved, a subsequent apology on 8 May 2005 was accepted. The matter never went to litigation.1

The apology appeared in this form on the weblog:

I recognize and accept that a number of statements that I made on my on-line journal “Caustic Soda”, in particular the blog post of 3 March 2005, were defamatory of A*STAR, its Chairman, Mr Philip Yeo and its executive officers.

I admit and acknowledge that these statements are false and completely without any foundation.

I unreservedly apologize to A*STAR, its Chairman Mr Philip Yeo, and its executive officers for the distress and embarrassment caused to them by these statements.

I undertake not to repeat the statements, or make further statements of the same or similar effect in this or any other forum or media. I further undertake to remove any such posting anywhere that has not been deleted.2

Fast on the heels of the apology, international press freedom groups and media watchdogs, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (‘CPJ’) and Reporters Without Borders (‘RWB’),3 seized on this incident to criticise Singapore on its strict media controls and oppressive environment in relation to free speech. The threat of, or action on, defamation was specifically singled out as the favoured tool to bludgeon free speech. Defamation is a legitimate action in most Commonwealth countries. The only country which tips the scale in favour of free speech over defamation is the United States, which sets a more stringent test for an action in defamation to succeed.4 Hence, short of an amendment to the current law of defamation,5 which is not likely to be expected, what Singapore bloggers (and bloggers commenting on Singaporeans) should be aware of is how to blog effectively and creatively to avoid legal censure (and the embarrassment of a public apology or the cost of paying damages). Here are some tips on how not to be sued for defamation while writing a weblog:

1 Only blog about yourself and your life, which is not a difficult thing to do for some people, although it will be more difficult for bloggers who are out to find an audience. Alternatively, generally post positive comments.

2 Make comments about society and people in general, but without identifying any person or group of persons in particular. Even caustic remarks and insults can be made, so long as you do not identify anyone or any group of persons for ridicule. That was what Philip Yeo himself did when he made the sweeping comment that ‘Singapore boys are whiny and immature’, which was seconded by one of his female scholars.6 It created a spate of bitter replies from some disenfranchised Singapore men, but there was no question of defamation suits.7

3 If you feel confident enough, make all the comments you want provided that you are: (a) sure of its truthfulness (and can prove it in a court of law);8 (b) making a fair comment (and not just any sort of comment but one of ‘public interest’);9 or (c) replying to comments made about you by another person to defend yourself and to protect your self-interest. You can also get the consent of the subject to insult him or her, but make sure you have it in writing and that it is not obtained illegitimately, such as by duress or undue influence.

4 Make the blog satiric and parodiac. Think Colin Goh’s ‘www.talkingcock.com’ web site or Mr Brown’s ‘www.mrbrown.com’ blog. Biting comments or political and social satire, which no reasonable person will seriously consider to be true, are safe to post.

5 Make your blog password-controlled and only allow access to people you trust. However, selective sharing or dissemination may not suit the blogger who is seeking an audience online, whether for fame or fortune.10 Of course, if one cannot defame other people online, then certainly one cannot use a blog to spread unsubstantiated rumours carelessly, particularly if they are known to be false, and certainly if it is done out of malice.11

Thou Shalt Not Negligently Miscommunicate

Not only should one take care not to perpetrate libel or falsehood online, one should also verify the accuracy of the information being put up so as to avoid negligent mis-statements which may expose one to a negligence lawsuit.12 Liability can rest on tort law if there is no contractual basis for an action.13

Thou Shalt Not Breach Thy Contract

Contract for sale or services

If you want to peddle wares (or services) online through your blog page, then you have to be aware that you can breach it the same way as if you sell goods or provide services offline. For example, you can be sued on your contract by a purchaser for non-conforming goods (or services) because you can breach it in the same way as if you had sold them in a real world setting (ie physical store).14 Familiarise yourself with the Electronic Transactions Act (Cap 88).15 Generally, just be aware that most contract law principles apply the same way to online contracts as they do to oral or written contracts negotiated and agreed upon in the physical realm.

Employment

It is not advisable to blog in the office or to make negative comments about your job or the boss for obvious reasons. If you are found out, your blog may be considered your employer’s property, you may be out of a job soon or you may be sued for breach of confidentiality or breach of your employment contract or of your duties as an employee or agent (eg fiduciary duty).16

Confidence and privacy

Even though we do not have a comprehensive set of privacy or data protection laws in Singapore, you should still not reveal information that you are contractually bound to keep confidential. There are other areas of law, which can hold you accountable for the things you say, especially if they are work-related matters. For example, there can be implied contractual terms of trust and confidence in employment contracts between employers and employees.

Thou Shall Not Steal

Like any other website creators, bloggers must beware of intellectual property right infringement. Intellectual property is a vast subject area, but even laymen should have some rudimentary knowledge of them in this day and age. So do not upload music files or provide links to illegal download sites (ie copyright infringement). You may hyperlink or quote but make sure you attribute or give credit to the original creators or authors. Do not copy logos, trademarks, and certainly do not register a website address which can deceive or confuse web surfers that your website is that of another.

Thou Shalt Not Commit Crimes

It only takes some common sense to know what is criminal conduct which should be avoided. The criminal laws of Singapore can be perused online.17 For instance, do not make serious threats to others, or upload pornographic or other offensive or objectionable materials or images, online. These are just some of the offences contained in the Penal Code (Cap 224), which contains the general criminal offences in Singapore. Do not spread viruses or worms, or do anything against the Computer Misuse Act (Cap 50A). Do not make seditious remarks (such as racist postings) online in contravention of the Sedition Act (Cap 290).18 If you want to be extra safe, act according to rules of good conscience and decency and inculcate good netiquette.

Conclusion

When all is said and done, the blog is really not a minefield if some precautions are taken, and there is awareness of the law and how it applies equally to words and pictures in the electronic form as it does in the physical form. A little education and some common sense is a recipe for worry-free blogging. Be Aware, Exercise Care.

Perhaps Acid Flask was emboldened by the way libel and slander are handled in the United States. Briefly, in the US, there is a requirement of ‘actual malice’ on the part of the defamer in order for a defamation claim to succeed. This standard came out of the majority decision in the US Supreme Court case of New York Times v Sullivan 376 US 254 (1964). It operated to protect a citizen’s right to comment on government officials, even to the point of defamation (but short of doing it with the knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not). See Brennan J’s statements at ibid 279–80. The standard was extended to apply to ‘public persons’ in Curtis Publishing Company v Butts 388 US 130, particularly Harlan J’s statements at ibid 163–4. However, ‘private persons’ (including public persons outside their public persona) are still subject to the negligence standard only.

5
Defamation is a tort action developed under common law. The Defamation Act (Cap 75) adds on and clarifies certain aspects of the law on defamation and malicious falsehood. To prove that he had been defamed whether orally (slander) or in a more permanent form (libel), a claimant must prove that the statement was in fact made by the respondent and that it was defamatory in the eyes of an objective reasonable person such that it would injure his or her reputation ‘by exposing him [or her] to hatred, contempt, or ridicule, or which tends to lower him in the esteem of right-thinking members of society’ (per Lord Atkin in Sim v Stretch [1936] 2 All ER 1237). The statement must refer to the claimant (ie that he or she was identifiable) and be published to a third party (ie communicated).

7
If a class of people is defamed, an action can only be brought if the individual members of that class are identifiable as individuals. Too large a class will rule that out. See the comments by Willes J in Eastwood v Holmes (1858) 1 F&F 347 at 349. See also the House of Lords decision in Knupffer v London Express Newspaper Ltd [1944] AC 116. As an aside, vulgar abuse is also not considered defamatory. As Mansfield CJ stated in Thorley v Kerry [1812] 4 Taunt 355 at 365, ‘[f]or mere general abuse spoken no action lies’. See also the statements made by Pollock CB and Wilde B in Parkins v Scott [1862] 1 H&C 153 at 158, 159. See s 8 (‘Justification’) of the Defamation Act (Cap 75).

9
What can constitute ‘of interest to the public’? For example, they may include opinions or views on books, music, art, plays, shows as well as the activities of public figures. So comments on the happenings of your neighbour, his wife, children and dog are not of public interest in the legal sense (although the tabloids may find it salacious enough for publication). See s 9 (‘Fair Comment’) of the Defamation Act (Cap 75). Fair comment can be in the form of allegations of fact or expressions of opinion or both.

M-I-3 in Shanghai

Went to watch M-I-3 with my friends after our fyp company poster presentation yesterday. Realised that in the movie, they actually went to Shanghai to retrieve "Rabbit's foot". Having been in Shanghai for my Industrial Attachment last year, I feel that maybe I should post a picture of Shanghai in my blog. At the same time, I also realised that I have not posted any pictures at all since the opening of this blog again.

Haha, so here goes: This photograph is taken by my friend, Weihao when we went to the Bund (上海滩)during late spring season last year. The late spring season is the best period to take photographs of the Bund as it is not too foggy as compared to the winter period. However, you do have to bring a tripod along or else all the pictures taken will be a bit blur. You can also see the Oriental Pearl in the picture which is also seen in M-I-3 movie and is a symbol of Shanghai. Okay, enjoy the picture and download it if you want. If you find that the resolution is not so good, you can email me and I will send you the actual photo.

Right now, I do have a unfulfilled wish in my heart. That is to bring my parents to Shanghai. Actually last year, they have indicated to visit me in Shanghai when I was there for my stint. However, my dad met with a terrible accident resulting in the cancellation of the trip. Thank God that my dad survived the accident and has now recovered completely. My parents have seldom travelled overseas and the further they have went so far is Malacca. Hence, it is my wish that I can bring them to visit Shanghai one day.

Bad Cough

*cough*

Yes, I am down with a bad cough. *cough*
Been coughing continously since last Thursday after my last paper or rather when I wrote my first official blog entry since missing in action last year December.

Have just seen a doctor at a clinic nearby and taken the medicine. I am feeling very drowsy now. It definitely feels lousy to be sick.

Service

As I type out the word, "Service" into the blog title for this entry, I remember clearly my primary school motto - Ready to serve. Primary school to me was an affair which happened nineteen years ago. However, this motto is still very vivid in my mind especially when I reflect upon the fact that I am going back to National Service (NS) at the end of this month.

Yes, to all my friends out there, I am going back to army soon. To many of my male friends, I will be wasting my time there. To many of my female friends, the first question to their minds is, "Huh?" However to me, I feel it is a privilege to be able to serve my nation for these remaining four months. This is because I feel that I am a Singaporean only after I have been able to serve my nation, Singapore.

I left four months of NS liability as years back, I disrupted to enter NTU for further studies. As my studies come to a closure, it is time for me to go back to complete my NS. I feel that I am ready to serve and this feeling did not come to me just because I have clicked on the new NS portal informing the authorities that I am ready to resume my disruption. This feeling came to me because of Christ who demostrates that service is the top priority in His mind when He came two thousand years ago to show us the way back to God.

Jesus, Himself is our servant King. He did not come to be served but to serve. Following Jesus has enabled me to know what service is all about. If serving the nation is such a great privilege to a Singaporean male, I can conclude that serving God the Father is even more privileged. The reason simply is to be able to serve God the Father can only mean that you are His child! Being His child gives you the right to know the Father intimately.

As Paul puts it, "And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light." (Colossians 1:10-12)

Remember my previous post? I have mentioned that Light is the name of the Messiah who is Christ Jesus. If we are qualified to be able to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of Christ Jesus. Can you imagine it? Jesus before He was arrested and sentenced to be crucified, He had demostrated the main role of a spiritual leader is to serve by washing the feet of His disciples. Therefore, I feel that being able to serve is indeed a privilege be it to my Nation or to my family and friends. Eventually, it is the Lord Christ I am serving in the midst of all my other services. (Col 3:23-24)

Ready to serve. Am I ready to serve? With regards to NS, I have prepared my heart. With regards to my family, I am committed to them. With regards to my friends, I will wish to serve them more by sharing the Gospel to them, by sharing their burdens with them, by praying for them, by lending a listening ear to them, by leading them out of darkness, by doing many more things for them which I am unable to list them all out here. All in all, I will really like to develop a servant's heart. I believe if I sincerely show my servant heart to the people around me, I will be able to testify for Christ's compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience (Col 3:12) to them. Eventually, they will be able to see God, accept His unconditional love for them and by His grace be saved.

We will then be able to serve Christ together and by our service, the world around us will be able to experience the warmness of God's love! Shall we serve one another starting from this very moment?

Light

If someone comes up to you and ask you this question, "What is light?" How will you answer him in your own words without looking into the dictionary? How do you explain to him the concept of light in plain words?

In my opinion, to know and understand light, first of all we need to understand darkness. Darkness is an environment where everything is concealed from sight. We cannot see things in darkness and hence it identifies with the colour black. This comes to my mind one IQ question which was posed to me many years ago when I was still a kid.

The question is, "What is something that can fill up a room in a twinkle of an eye?" The answer is light. It can be from the flame of a candle, rays from a torch and simply from the fluorescent lamp in the room. In one shot, light fills up the entire room.

Light exposes darkness and everything which was previously hidden comes into full view. Nothing can be concealed under the illumination of light. If we look at it beyond the perspective of a room, light plays a vital role in our world. We can never imagine if we wake up in the morning and we still see darkness. Light even helps plants to photosynthesize and make food. Light shows us the way to our schools or workplaces. For some, light also ensures that your water heaters are working. Light is everywhere and light gives you a ray of hope if you are lost in a tunnel and you see light at the end.

Jesus said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12)

What does this verse tells us after all the discussions about light?

Light is the name of the Messiah, as it is written (Dan 2:22) And light dwelleth with him. God is light, and Christ is the image of the invisible God; God of gods, Light of lights. He was expected to be a light to enlighten the Gentiles (Luk 2:32), and so the light of the world, and not of the Jewish church only. The visible light of the world is the sun, and Christ is the Sun of righteousness. One sun enlightens the whole world, so does one Christ, and there needs no more. Christ in calling himself the light expresses two points.

1. What he is in himself - most excellent and glorious.
2. What he is to the world - the fountain of light, enlightening every man. What a dungeon would the world be without the sun! So would it be without Christ by whom light came into the world, (John 3:19)

The inference from this doctrine is, He that followeth me, as a traveller follows the light in a dark night, shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. If Christ be the light, then firstly, it is our duty to follow him, to submit ourselves to his guidance, and in every thing take directions from him, in the way that leads to happiness. Many follow false lights that lead them to destruction; but Christ is the true light. It is not enough to look at this light, and to gaze upon it, but we must follow it, believe in it, and walk in it, for it is a light to our feet, not our eyes only.

Secondly, it is the happiness of those who follow Christ that they shall not walk in darkness. They shall not be left destitute of those instructions in the way of truth which are necessary to keep them from destroying error, and those directions in the way of duty which are necessary to keep them from damning sin. They shall have the light of life, that knowledge and enjoyment of God which will be to them the light of spiritual life in this world and of everlasting life in the other world, where there will be no death nor darkness. Follow Christ, and we shall undoubtedly be happy in both worlds. Follow Christ, and we shall follow him to heaven.

As I prepare for the word session for my cell group this Sat, I will really like to spend time meditating upon this truth before I can teach His Living Word.

One More Chance

Just watched the movie, "One More Chance" (三个好人). Let me give you a basic synopsis of the movie:

Huang, Hui and Guang served jail sentences for their respective crimes which they have committed. Despite coming from different backgrounds, an extraordinary bond was formed during their time in prison. After their release from jail, the trio encounters severe family pressure as well as societal discrimination despite their willingness to turn over a new leaf.

After watching the movie, it causes me to reflect. It was a very touching movie and in fact, I was sobbing at some parts of the movie. I think I have really put myself in the shoes of the three main characters as they tackled their different life issues and situations. They need that one more chance very urgently. Although I can identify with them by imagining myself being in their shoes, but afterall it is still only an imagination on my part.

The case is different with Christ Jesus, our Lord. Jesus being the Son of God, enjoys a Trinitarian relationship with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. The foundation of their relationship is love. In Genesis, God created man so that he can enjoy this perfect relationship with Him. However, man sinned in Genesis 3 and our chance to enjoy this relationship with Him is broken. Is this the end?

Definitely not. God is sovereign and He has already planned in His mind to send His Son, Jesus Christ to redeem us even before He created man. Hence, there is indeed one more chance for us to go back to God. Jesus did not only imagine Himself to be in our shoes when we are dealing with our own respective life issues and situations. He loved us so much that He came down as His creation, man 2006 years ago. John 1:14 says, "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us." The Word is Christ.

Because he himself suffered when he was tempted he is able to help those who are being tempted. (Hebrews 2:18) Jesus became like us and He knows what we are all going through. He came down from heaven just to give us one more chance to go back to God. He redeemed us by His Blood, bearing all our sins and dying on the Cross to pay for our debts. He is the Son of Man because He is our example of a Perfect Man who lived a life in full obedience to God the Father. With Him, God is well pleased and He is saying to us, "Look! This is my Son, Jesus who is lifted up for all to see. Follow in His example."

Therefore, God raised Him from the dead to prove that He is the Living God. The curse of sin which is death is broken by Christ's resurrection from the dead. Jesus answered, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) This is indeed true because Jesus is the only one beside the Holy Spirit who is in a Trinitarian God relationship. Only the son can know the father intimately. How much more does Jesus being the Son of God knows God the Father!

Everyone needs one more chance to go back to God because we are all born sinners. The good news is God did not forfeit us that one chance we need. He gave it to us freely through Jesus. As we utter in our lips complaining about that one chance we need in life (be it careers or relationships), are we actually rejecting Jesus who is actually God's only chance for us to go back to Him?

Home Sweet Home

Yesterday was Polling Day, a big day for Singapore in terms of electing the leaders of the Republic. For me, I finally had a chance to truly exercise my citzenship rights after being a Singaporean for some twenty odd years. Okay, period. That is all I want to say about Polling Day. Remember voting is secret.

Yesterday also marked the day where I would be shifting back to my house after staying in school hostel for some ten over months. As my dad had not have many passengers on Polling Day, he offered to drive me up to NTU to collect my belongings back home in the morning. In addition, he even offered to drive me out for lunch and later to church for my usual tuition project. We had a great day of fellowshipping together as father and son eating chicken rice together at Hougang Avenue 5 coffee-shop. And yes, we enjoyed our usual coffee-0 and for me, tea together too. (I do not want to order coffee as I try to cut down on my coffee intake.)

Moving out of hall was not too troublesome for me as previously I had packed all my things properly and it was just a matter of shifting the things out to my dad's cab. Overall, we took a total of about fifteen minutes which was in fact much shorter than our travelling time. Yah, I stay very far from my Boon Lay campus.

As I reflect after shifting back home, I certainly feel a sense of joy in my heart. This is because I am finally home and I will be spending even more time now with my family instead of only the weekends previously. My home is truly where I belong and I feel most relaxed when I am at home. The main point is I am with my family.

Actually, we are all living in God's student hostel here on earth. Earth is God's training school or rather pre-nursery for all of us. One day, we will truly move out of our hostel and go back home where we all belong. That is when we will be united with our spiritual family, the Church together with our Godly Father. Jesus being our big brother is now preparing rooms for all of us. When that moment comes, it will indeed be "Home Sweet Home".

Hence, let us not burdened ourselves with lots of our belongings. Just like when I shifted to my school hostel, I tried to bring only the necessary things which I needed. The reason is I know that one day I will be shifting home and I will not want to burden myself on that day where I will need to carry lots of my belongings. This reminds me of a sermon which I heard when I was in Shanghai Community Church last year. The main point of the sermon was, "Do not spend all your time decorating the hotel room." Life on earth is like staying in God's student hostel or the hotel room. One day, you will vacate from that hostel or hotel room. Therefore, let us put our minds on the things above. (Matt 6:19-21)

To end off this blog entry, I will like to put up a short story here:

There was a country long time ago where the people would change a king every year. The person who would become the king had to agree to a contract that he will be sent to an island after his one year of being a king.

One king finished his term and it was time for him to go to the island and live there. The people dressed him up in expensive clothes and put him on an elephant and took him around the cities to say goodbye to all the people. This was the moment of sadness for all the kings who ruled for one year. After saying farewell, the people took the king with a boat to the remote island and left him there.

On their way back, they discovered a ship that had sunk just recently. They saw a young man who survived by holding on to a floating piece of wood. As they needed a new king, they picked up the young man and took him to their country. They requested him to be a king for a year. First he refused but later he agreed to be a king. People told him about all the rules and regulations and that how he will be sent to an island after one year. After three days of being a king, he asked the ministers if they could show him the island where all the other kings were sent. They agreed and took him to the island. The island was covered with thick jungles and sounds of vicious animals were heard coming out of them. The king went little bit inside to check. Soon he discovered the dead bodies of all the past kings. He understood that as soon as they were left in the island, the animals came and killed them.

The king went back to the country and collected 100 strong workers. He took them to the island and instructed them to clean the jungle, remove all the deadly animals and cut down all the excess trees. He would visit the island every month to see how the work was progressing. In the first month, all the animals were removed and many trees were cut down. In the second month, the whole island was cleaned out. The king then told the workers to plant gardens in various parts of the island. He also took with himself useful animals like chickens, ducks, birds, goats, cows etc. In the third month, he ordered the workers to build big houses and docking stations for ships. Over the months, the island turned into a beautiful place.

The young king would wear simple clothes and spend very little from his earnings as a king. He sent all the earnings to the island for storage. When nine months passed like this, the king called the ministers and told them:

"I know that I have to go the island after one year, but I would like to go there right now." But the ministers didn't agree to this and said that he has to wait for another 3 months to complete the year. 3 months passed and now it was a full year. The people dressed up the young king and put him on an elephant to take him around the country to say goodbye to others. However, this king is unusually happy to leave the kingdom.

People asked him, "All the other kings would cry at this moment and why are you laughing?"

He replied, "Don't you know what the wise people say? They say that when you came to this world as a baby, you were crying and everyone was smiling. Live such a life that when you are dead, you will be smiling and everyone around you will be crying. I have lived that life. While all the other kings were lost into the luxuries of the kingdom, I always thought about the future and planned for it. I have turned the deadly island into a beautiful abode for me where I can stay peacefully."

Let us take a leaf out of this wise king's book, shall we?

Grace

I feel all of us need grace and also to display grace to everyone around us. I remembered very vividly about my secondary school principal who preaches to us to have social graces not only to show it in our toilets (That time, Singapore was educating Singaporeans about having social graces by making sure that public toilets are clean and tidy) but also to display it to the people around us. This is to ensure that we will be showing a good example as students of our school to the public.

Indeed, we need to display grace to everyone around us. We do not have to mention a far-fetched example. Just for instance, public transportation. Many times when the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) arrives at the station, once the doors are opened, many people just rushes into the cabin without even waiting for the alighting passengers to alight first. This often results in unneeded frustration and unnecessary pushing. All we need is just to hold on for a minute by standing out of the way, allowing the passengers to alight first. Grace will be shown just by taking up of our that one minute.

On the other hand, when we become the alighting passengers, similarly we need to be given that same grace so that we can alight from the train smoothly without any hassle. Hence, not only we need to display grace to people around us but we also need grace to be given to us. As one of my church speakers said last Sunday, grace is an undeserved favour. Not that we do not need to keep our public toilets clean or give way to alighting passengers but come to think of it, we are giving a favour to our fellow people of Singapore. Furthermore, we are giving it out of goodwill.

If we as God's creation knows the importance of showing grace and being given grace. I can conclude that God Himself being the Creator, knows the importance of grace more than any of His creation. Jesus, Himself has given or rather lavished on us His Amazing Grace by forgiving all of our sins which we commited against Him.

The day when I was born, I have already sinned against Him. This is because I have turned away from Him and worshipped other things (For example, idols like money and man-made structures) beside Him forgoing that precious relationship that He desires to have with me. However, He did not give up on me and slowly worked in my heart through His Holy Spirit, bringing me to come to know Him and experienced this Amazing Grace - that is to believe in Him, repent of my sins and follow Him.... in that, He gave me the right to be called His Son.

Although, I have done many things to sadden Him, yet He forgave me and by His Grace, I am saved. (Eph 2:8-9) God's Grace is indeed an undeserved favour from Him. We are all not worthy of His salvation gift but yet He gave it all to us by His Grace.

Gratitude

As I complete my final paper of my final semester in NTU yesterday noon, I look back at the days of my life. I discover that I need to express a great sense of gratitude to my parents. One thing for sure, I will not be here this far without their constant support in terms of mentally and financially.

My parents for one are not well educated and they can be in fact be classified as illiterate. However, they do not wish for me to follow in their footsteps. Hence, my dad drives his cab early in the day from about 3am to 5.30pm everyday just hoping to earn enough money to support me through my education and to see to all my needs. My mum, on her part, needs to stand all day long working in a manufacturing plant as an operator and currently has to even walk around all day long without a chance to sit down to rest her legs during the company restructuring of the production lines. At the end of the day, she just hopes to earn enough to again support me through my education and also to see to all my needs.

As I reflect, I feel that I really need to express my gratitude to them. I hope to give them the best of all I can give. For example, being patient with them is indeed one area I am currently working on. These days, they have been fascinated with sending short message service (SMS) in chinese. Therefore, I show them patiently as to how to key in the chinese words using either in Hanyu Pinyin or in chinese strokes. This is just one point I hope to bring out. Let's be expressing our gratitude to our parents. Let's remember that we will not be here today without their constant support and bringing up.

In the same way, if our earthly parents know how to treat their children well, how much more will our Godly Father treat us who are His children (John 1:12)? Thus, in the same way, we all owe a sense of gratitude to our God, the Father. Let's remember and etch the image of our Lord Jesus Christ taking all our sins upon Himself and died on the cross resulting us to be free from our bondage of sins. He has indeed paid the full price of our sins with His life because He loves us! (Phi 2:6-11)
